Cloth. Condition: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). First edition. A beautiful book of Woodward's English translation of Apuleius' famous story. First edition. Printed at the Chiswick Press. George Ratcliffe Woodward (27 December 1848 3 March 1934) was an Anglican priest who wrote mostly religious verse, both original and translated from ancient authors. The best-known of these were written to fit traditional melodies, mainly of the Renaissance. He sometimes harmonised these melodies himself, but usually left this to his frequent collaborator, composer Charles Wood. Cupid and Psyche is a legend that first appeared as a digressionary story told by an old woman in Lucius Apuleius' novel, The Golden Ass, written in the 2nd century AD. Apuleius likely used an earlier tale as the basis for his story, modifying it to suit the thematic needs of his novel. With original protective paper wraps. In original imprinted paper-covered boards. Externally, lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound, bright and clean. Almost all pages are unopened at the top edge. Very Good Indeed. book.
