Softcover. Condition: Good. The first professional female writer, Christine de Pizan (1363-1431) was widowed at age twenty-five and supported herself and her family by enlisting powerful patrons for her poetry. Her Livre de la Cité des Dames (1405) is the earliest European work on women's history by a woman. An allegorical poem that revises masculine traditions, it asserts and defends the authority of women in general and of its author in particular. In this generously illustrated book, Maureen Quilligan provides a persuasive and penetrating interpretation of the Cité.

Book
Paperback. Condition: Sehr gut. XV, 290 p.: Ill. ein sehr gutes Exemplar / a very good copy. - The first professional female writer we know of, Christine de Pizan (1363 1431) was widowed at age twenty-five and supported herself and her family by enlisting powerful patrons for her poetry. Quilligan draws upon the insights of such contemporary theoretical approaches as object relations theory, post-Lacanian psychoanalysis, and feminist film theory. She pays particular attention to the implications of such structural characteristics as the odd juxtapositions of episodes and layerings of texts in Christine's treatment of misogynist history. Tracing her deft revisions of stories adapted from Giovanni Boccaccio and Vincent de Beauvais, Quilligan exposes the radical nature of Christine's critique of their narratives. In the first book-length commentary on the Cité, Quilligan also responds to charges of political conservatism that feminists have leveled against Christine's writings by reexamining her poetry against the background of the Hundred Years' War. Using as an example her poem on Joan of Arc, Quilligan looks at the connections between Christine's politics and the warrior saint's monarchist ideology and gender-transgressing achievements, maintaining that Christine's distinctive brand of political absolutism is of real importance for the construction of early modem subjectivity and authority. Literary theorists, feminist critics, medievalists and their students, and anyone interested in women's writing and in the history of women during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance will want to read The Allegory of Female Authority. / Contents List of Illustrations Preface Introduction 1.
